Dr. Isaac Gammal is an expert in the surgical management of upper extremity conditions, particularly musculoskeletal issues of the hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow.
My passion is treating people affected by hand, wrist and upper extremity impairment and restoring them to peak functional capability. I am personally informed by my own experience with orthopedic care, suffering with recurrent shoulder instability for several years. The surgical care I received inspired my passion for the field of upper extremity surgery and afforded my unique empathic approach to caring for my patients.
I received my medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine (US News & World Report #2 Medical School in the US), graduating in the top quintile of my class. I then completed a combined five-year residency in general and orthopedic surgery in at Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Health Center, serving my final year as chief resident and teaching associate. During residency I gained exposure to all aspects of orthopedic care, in children and adults. Following residency, I completed a dedicated one-year fellowship in hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow surgery at the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. There I gained surgical expertise in all aspects of hand and upper extremity surgery, working closely with leaders in the field. Across my training I participated in over 4,000 surgical procedures.
I now see patients throughout Brooklyn, specializing in surgery of the hand and upper extremity (shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand). I have special interest in sports-related injuries as well as traumatic injuries of the upper extremity, including fractures of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. In addition, I specialize in tendon ruptures/lacerations, nerve laceration, post-traumatic reconstruction, rotator cuff injuries and arthroscopic repair, shoulder dislocations/labral tears, and arthritis and nerve-related conditions of the upper extremity.
I have been honored to receive numerous awards and appointments, including the Stanely E. Asnis Clinical Excellence Award and was inducted into the C. McCollister Evarts resident leadership forum. I have presented at several regional and international conferences on topics in hand and upper extremity surgery, including presenting one of the top papers at a 2022 meeting of the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand. I have been published in several peer-reviewed journals including Hand and the Journal of Arthroplasty, and published textbook chapters in Wrist and Elbow Arthroscopy.
I am board-eligible in Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. I am also a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
